Dr. Mohammed al-Farra, a U.S. physician, has chosen to stay behind in Gaza amid the ongoing conflict, stating that he “cannot abandon [his] team.” Al-Farra, a pediatric intensive care specialist, has been in Gaza for two years, working with teams treating the most severe cases among children including cancer patients, babies born with severe birth defects and kids with serious infections.
In conversation with media, Al-Farra explained the challenges of operating under such conditions, with frequent power outages, lack of resources, and the ever-looming threat of violence. Yet, he states that these difficulties only make his work more necessary. He stated, “The minute you see children in need and you can do something about it, you simply do it.”
Despite the conflict, Al-Farra continues to work tirelessly to treat his young patients, often dealing with much more complicated medical cases than he would in the United States.
