The Republican Party’s rewriting of the events on January 6th was a crucial first step in Donald Trump’s comeback. By downplaying the extent of the insurrection that day, the GOP was able to shrug off much of the blame and avoid direct accountability for the actions that led to and resulted from the riot at the Capitol.
This allowed them to continue to stand by Trump and keep his core base of support smiling. This in turn enabled Trump to remain a potent political force in the Republican Party, despite his loss at the ballots. With a base of support still firmly in his corner, Trump was able to go about rebuilding his influence within the GOP and is now widely viewed as a potential 2024 presidential candidate.
Without the rewriting of history the GOP attempted after January 6th, it is unlikely Trump would have been able to make such a successful comeback. The narrative pushed by the Party of downplaying the role Trump played in the insurrection and the events that led up to it enabled his supporters to retain their faith in him. This, in turn, provided the foundation for Trump’s resurgence.
