The far-right coalition in the European Parliament, known as the Identity and Democracy (ID) group, decided to expel Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) party after it made controversial comments about the SS soldiers. AfD member Andreas Kalbitz praised the Waffen-SS, a paramilitary group under Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany, causing a storm of criticism.
The expulsion results in AfD losing significant influence in the European Parliament. The ID group is the fifth-largest in the parliament, and since the AfD is no longer a part of it, they will have less say in policy debates.
The AfD has faced much scrutiny over the years for promoting a nationalist, anti-immigration agenda, and for controversial statements made by its politicians. This expulsion demonstrates the extent to which the party’s fellow far-right legislators in the European Parliament are uncomfortable with some of its positions and comments.
