Dengue fever is a major public health concern in many parts of the world, including the Americas. According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), over 5.2 million cases have been reported in this region, surpassing the yearly record.
Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection that triggers high fever, severe headache, and pain behind the eyes, among other symptoms. If not identified and treated promptly, it can develop into severe dengue, which can be fatal.
PAHO urged member countries to intensify efforts to control the mosquito populations that transmit the virus. It also stressed health education to prevent the spread of dengue and early detection to manage cases effectively.
Remember, while there is a vaccine for dengue, it is not 100% effective and is not suitable for everyone. Vector control (control of the mosquito population) and personal protection against mosquito bites (using repellents, mosquito nets, wearing long sleeves and pants, etc.) remain vital in preventing infection.
If you’re traveling to or live in an affected area, keep these precautions in mind. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms consistent with dengue fever, seek immediate medical attention.
