The U.S. auto safety regulator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), is currently investigating two crashes involving Zoox, a startup acquired by Amazon which is developing robotaxi technology. The accidents took place in California in September 2022, and both involved Zoox’s developmental self-driving vehicles.
In both cases, the autonomous cars were being manually driven by human operators at the time of the accident. However, the extent of damages and any possible injuries from the incidents have not been disclosed yet.
The NHTSA is working to find out if the Zoox automated driving system malfunctioned or if the incidents were due to human error. This is not the first time such technology has come under scrutiny. Previous self-driving vehicle crashes from other companies have also undergone investigation, as regulators work to ensure the safety of autonomous driving technology.
Amazon acquired Zoox in 2020 with a focus on self-driving technology deployment. The investigation, depending on its findings, could impact on the company’s plans and timeline.
As an update, Zoox has also been cooperating entirely with the investigation and adheres strictly to meeting safety standards in its operations.
