On May 25, 2021, the District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine’s office filed an antitrust lawsuit against Amazon, alleging that the tech giant is abusing its power as the largest online marketplace in the U.S. to charge exorbitant prices and restrict competition.
The lawsuit alleges that Amazon’s policies effectively require third-party sellers who offer their products on other platforms to set their prices no lower than what they charge on Amazon’s website. According to the suit, this practice results in higher prices and less choice for consumers. Amazon Prime delivery exclusions are not the primary focus of the lawsuit.
As of now, there are no reports suggesting that Amazon is being sued for allegedly excluding certain neighbourhoods from Prime delivery. Such claims previously arose in 2016, but Amazon responded by expanding its services to those areas.
Any further legal actions would be a part of ongoing scrutiny towards Amazon’s business practices, as the company has faced similar antitrust accusations both within the U.S. and globally.
