That is indeed a significant milestone for Blue Origin! It showcases their growing capability in the space tourism industry and marks a successful return after a nearly two-year hiatus. On October 13th, 2021, the company launched its New Shepard rocket, with six tourists aboard, to the edge of space. The passengers experienced a few minutes of weightlessness and were able to view the curvature of the Earth before returning.
Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos, is among several companies, including Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic, that are competing in the burgeoning space tourism market. Their goal is to make space more accessible to tourists and eventually establish a sustainable human presence beyond Earth.
Just to note, people sometimes refer to the passengers on these types of flights as “space tourists” because they get to experience a short period of microgravity and view Earth from space, even though they do not go into orbit around the Earth.
