Ecuador’s president, Guillermo Lasso, is receiving positive reinforcement in his fight against crime within the country as early referendum results support his tougher stance and law enforcement has managed to arrest a major gang member.
The preliminary findings from the nationwide ballot suggest that a majority of the population back President Lasso’s proposals to impose tougher sentences on criminals and to strip them of certain legal protections.
This comes on top of the recent arrest of a significant gang member, bolstering Lasso’s campaign against criminal groups that have been contributing to an increase in violence and insecurity across the nation.
Under President Lasso’s administration, tackling crime has been a focal point due to escalating concerns. He has prioritized aggressive efforts to curb the influence of criminal organizations, including the creation of special law enforcement units and heightened surveillance in known criminal hotspots.
The administration has also proposed stricter legislation for punishing criminal behavior and has called for a review of the justice system to ensure its effectiveness in handling criminal proceedings.
