Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), the House Republican Whip, said on Monday that House Republicans plan on grilling Dr. Anthony Fauci next week about his role in the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a statement, Scalise said that Fauci, the director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the nation’s top expert on infectious diseases, will be questioned about his involvement in the origins of the virus and his recommendations for preventing future pandemics.
The hearing will take place on Tuesday, May 11. Scalise said that it will focus on “Dr. Fauci’s role in the Trump Administration’s response to COVID-19 and its broader efforts to protect Americans from pandemics and biothreats.”
Scalise added that lawmakers will also ask Fauci “whether his past responses have been based on science or political considerations” and about his “decisions and actions since the start of the pandemic.”
The hearing will follow several congressional oversight and investigative hearings on the Trump Administration’s response to the pandemic and the economic struggles faced by the American people.
